It's annual, it's in East Van, and it's a fundraiser for creative resistance and direct action in BC... AND THE BEST DANCE PARTY YOU’LL EVER MAKE OUT AT.

You don't need a date for this dance party, just a good attitude and a party outfit... Have a date? Bring them!

THE PEOPLE'S PROM WANTS YOU!

It's that time of year again folks. Mark your calendars cuz on Sunday February 14th you’ll be at THE PEOPLE'S PROM!

“What’s The People's Prom?” you may ask. Only the most kick ass antidote to Valentine’s Day in the city. You like funk and frolic? Love and revolution? Perfect. 80’s beats, valentine treats and dance floor feats await you at the best dance party you’ve been to since grade 10, guaranteed.

But The People’s Prom is more than a party. Each year the money raised goes into The People’s Trust Fund. The money in the Fund is given to one (or several) individuals or groups working on a specific issue. This year, all money raised goes toward grassroot, direct action and creative resistance groups engaged in the resistance to the 2010 Olympics. (Interested? Email peoplesprom@resist.ca or check out our website www.peoplesprom.resist.ca to find out more.)

“Wow! How do you pull of such an amazing feat?” you wonder. “And more importantly, how the hell can I be a part of the party of the year?”

VOLUNTEER!

Don’t just come to The People’s Prom – be a part of The People’s Prom. We need people to volunteer in the following areas:

Organize: Be part of the organizing committee, go to the meetings, do the dirty work and get the glory. (K, so there is no glory per se, but you will get bragging rights.)
Set up: Creating the mood is the best part. Come help us decorate.
Door: Greet the kids, take their tickets.
Coat check: Be the first to glimpse the unveiling of hot prom outfits.
Chaperones: Keep the peace, secure the vibe, make sure couples aren't dancing too close.
Bar: Serve booze, keep people happy. Serving It Right preferred.
Spin The Bottle: A giant spin the bottle wheel, with you as cupid!
Mystery Activity: You won't know what hit yah but you'll like it!
Clean up: Help us get our damage deposit back.

Your night will not be entirely taken up with prom responsibilities. You can volunteer for as long or as little as you like, but we’d like you to commit for a minimum of one hour on the night itself. There’ll be plenty of time for drinking and smooching after.

As a volunteer, you will get in free, revolutionise Valentine’s Day, have the satisfaction of being a part of something wonderful and get laid for sure.

For the last nine years, the People’s Prom, held on Valentine’s Day, has
been a night of fun and community celebration, a chance to enjoy a DIY
Prom. Most importantly, the People’s Prom is a fundraiser for
counter-hegemonic political action and creative resistance.

Trust Fund Objective: The People’s Trust Fund is open to all
community-based groups and organizations engaged in counter-hegemonic
political action and creative resistance. The Trust Funds offers funding
to projects that are unable to obtain mainstream sources of funding.

Each year the Trust Fund is used to support projects with a particular
focus. This year we are inviting proposals for projects that engage in
resistance to the 2010 Winter Olympics. We recognize the 2010 Games are
not about the celebration of human spirit and amateur athletic excellence,
but they are a direct an attack on our community and benefit only the
corporate elite.

Who can apply? The People’s Trust Fund aims to support grassroots
initiatives that focus on
a) direct action
b) counter-hegemonic community building and education
c) creative resistance

The Trust Fund is available to groups or organizations throughout British
Columbia.

How is the funding Allocated? Individual project grants will range from
$200-$1500 depending on the scale of the project. All Trust Fund money
must be used within 6 months of receiving it, otherwise the cheque will be
stale-dated.

The Trust Fund cannot go towards: Overhead: staff costs, rent, utility bills.

Project Summary.
Amount requested from the People’s Trust Fund.

the Prom Committee. Trust Funds are limited and shared between multiple
community-based projects. The Prom Committee looks at the following
criteria:

How would this initiative benefit the community?
Does it demonstrate creativity or uniqueness in the outcome?
How complete is the plan for delivering the activity?
Will this initiative have trouble getting funding from other sources?

2008 Peoples' Trust Fund Recipients

Once again many thanks to all the PromStars who came out and made the 2008 Peoples' Prom the greatest success yet! You Rule.

As you know the Peoples' Prom 2008 was a fundraiser for groups organizing to address two of the most significant issues facing British Colombians today - the homelessness/housing crisis and the 2010 Olympic attack on our communities.

This year the Peoples' Trust Fund supported four groups:

Native 2010 Resistance
Anti-Poverty Committee
The Torch - Community Zine Project
Under The Volcano - Festival of Art, Culture and Resistance

We found the work that these groups do inspiring and we thank them for their undying efforts to make our communities stronger and more vibrant.

Again, we thank all of you for supporting the Prom, all those who applied for funding and especially the incredible activists that we are funding this year.

As you may have heard People's Prom Tickets are sold out at stores but do not be disheartened as you can still get a ticket for the prom even if you can't get a date.

Tickets at the Door:
We are selling 150 tickets at the door ($10) to the first 150 people who show up dressed in prom gear and ready to get down and party like its 1987. This means you should show up dressed for the prom and ready to buy your ticket and head inside. One person = one ticket. We'll be accepting cash at the door ($10) but not sob stories about how your friend is too busy "at work" (read: pre-drinking at home) and really needs you to get her a ticket.

Tickets will be on sale when the Prom doors open 8pm - sharp.

Awesome Volunteers:
The Prom is a good time for sure but it also a radical fundraiser. This means that every year this totally amazing party happens because we have the help of some of the best volunteers that east van has ever seen. You should be one of them.

We ask that volunteers give us 1.5 hours of their time during the party and in exchange they get into the Prom for free with a guaranteed ticket, are objects of our undying love AND get too feel great about making one of the best parties around keep going.

If you don't want to feel like volunteering during the party we also have a few spots for folks who'd be willing to help set-up. We asking for about 4 hours of work from these folks. But these great souls don't have any obligations that night except to their valentine(s). Awesome!

We also ask that ALL volunteers attend a short (30 mins. or so) orientation on Feb 13th at 6:30PM at the Grandview Legion 2055 Commercial Drive. We'll hook you up with the people you'll be volunteering with and explaining how the night works. If you can't make it, let us know when you email us about volunteering.

People's Trust Fund

All proceeds raised from the People's Prom are put into the People's Trust Fund which is then given away to groups working in the community for social change. Each year a particular cause is chosen that the money will be raised for.

Perhaps you have a master plan for changing the world and a little cash would help?

The Prom Committee is redesigning the Peoples Trust Fund for 007, trying to mix it up and find new ways of giving the money back to the community. Check back here closer to the Prom to see how to apply to the Trust Fund.
